Ginny Boyd taught art. After a career teaching, she continues to draw what she dreams
Her spirituality comes through in her work, and she stands out as an artist in a family of engineers and scientists. On her website she quips, “I figured I was adopted.” Ginny Boyd was born in Washington, D.C. and was raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the city's Cotswold area. She has since developed a regional, national, and international presence through her art. Ginny Boyd as Teacher and MentorMrs. Boyd earned a bachelor of fine arts in visual art and a second bachelor’s in art education. She is a retired high school art teacher residing in Denver, N.C. During a recent interview with Mrs. Boyd, she spoke of those “teachable moments” that she misses: “I worked with students-at-risk.” She said they were very street smart and not inclined to express their true feelings. She found meaning, she said, asking questions such as “How does this read as a story?” and “Can you tell me what you see?” She sensed she was making an impact. “It was meaningful to see an awakening; they could definitely tell their stories through art.” Spirituality and ArtIn the 1990s, the people of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Charlotte (Boyd’s place of worship) asked her to do a special project. “I didn’t want to do it at first,” she said, “but it all came together.” She completed the project in 1995 and her “Stations of the Cross” is permanent art in the church sanctuary. Mrs. Boyd has also completed various pieces for friends and family over the years. The Community Art of Ginny BoydIn addition to various Best in Show awards, some of her accomplishments include:
Ginny Boyd’s Work Goes InternationalIn 2008, Mrs. Boyd’s work appeared at Haen Gallery in Asheville, N.C. in the show of “Southern Realities 2008.” Her section on “Southern Women” grabbed the attention of the United States Ambassador to Uganda. He was so moved by her piece entitled “Summer Southern Moon” that he had it placed in the U.S. Embassy in Kampola. Mrs. Boyd downplays the attention, but it clearly affirms her as a woman of conviction to an international audience. Boyd has traveled to the Greek Isles, Egypt, and Turkey, among other places, and her art continues to reflect the experiences and thoughts of a life guided by a higher power and passion.
